How to Keep Your Teeth Healthy When You Can't Go to the Dentist

Maintaining your oral health is always an important agenda, but it's especially important when you can't schedule a dental cleaning or exam. 

It's easy to overlook our teeth and gums if they aren't causing pain or concern. This can quickly change into a dental emergency if a cavity or gum disease develops. 

While our patients aren't able to see Dr. Nelson, it becomes even more essential to control the things they can away from our Missoula dentist office. Brush Teeth Twice Daily and Floss Once per Day

Maintaining a daily routine of brushing and flossing can prevent tooth decay, gum disease, and more. At Nelson Dentistry, we recommend investing in an electric toothbrush. Many of them have built-in timers for two minutes—the amount of time you should spend on brushing your teeth. It is vital to keep your oral hygiene in top shape if you can't see your dentist. 

Reduce Plaque Build-Up

Non-alcoholic mouthwash can help reduce the risk of gum inflammation and disease. Mouthwashes that contain alcohol can dry the mouth or disrupt oral health, which should be avoided if a trip to the dentist isn't in the picture. Fluoridated kinds of toothpaste can help with enamel quality as well.

Watch What You Eat

Indulging in snacks, sodas, and treats may seem harmless, but they can impact our happy mouths. Sugary and acidic foods or drinks can dissolve the tooth surface, and build plaque. 

Always Keep Hydrated

Water is great for our general well-being, and it helps flush out sugars and starches that accumulate after meals. 

Avoiding Unhealthy Oral Habits

Some behaviors we engage in can be detrimental to our teeth and gums. Smoking, for example, yellows our teeth and increases your risk for gum disease. Absentmindedly chewing on your fingernails, candy, pens, can stress your teeth and lead to chipped or broken teeth. 

Even hard foods can contribute to a cracked or damaged tooth like hard or sticky candy or popcorn.
