Dental Crowns in Missoula MT

Your dentist told you that your tooth needs restoration, but instead of a filling, they want you to have a crown. What is a dental crown, and why is it necessary when a dental filling was sufficient in the past?

Why Do I Need a Dental Crown?

Your dentist will recommend a crown if your tooth has sustained trauma or has become decayed beyond what a dental filling can repair. These are some of the circumstances that may require a crown:

  • To protect a tooth with a large old filling that needs to be replaced
  • To strengthen a tooth after root canal therapy
  • To restore a dental implant
  • To restore a tooth with decay on more than half of its structure
  • To strengthen and protect

A dental crown is designed to fit over your remaining tooth structure to replace your entire tooth. If you are missing a tooth that falls within the sight line of your smile, ceramic porcelain is used to create an appealing aesthetic look. Crowns on molars that are not highly visible may do better with metal for strength and durability.

The Process of Completing a Crown

Dental crowns in Missoula can typically be completed in two appointments over a couple of weeks. During your first appointment, your dentist prepares your tooth for your crown, takes impressions, and sends them to a local dental laboratory where your final restoration will be handcrafted. You will leave wearing a temporary crown until your final restoration ready in one to two weeks.

Once your final crown is ready, you'll return to your dentist to have it permanently seated. Your dentist will make any adjustments at that time to ensure that your bite is functioning correctly.

Restoring Your Smile in Missoula MT

If you need a tooth restored, it's important not to delay treatment that will protect the integrity of your tooth because a tooth that is decayed or fractured can become infected. Contact Nelson Dentistry right away to schedule your appointment.
